See the red and white this family is sporting in it's first photo? ... LOVE! I am a huge Wisconsin Badger fan, so they could have rolled up an hour late and sworn like sailors and I would have been ok with them... but they didn't - so that makes me like them even more. Actually, I found their most charming attributes to be the children they brought along. These beauties were so well behaved, loving and fun. I found myself thinking in the car on the way home from the session, boy, those kids were fan.tas.tic! I love helping great families create lasting keepsakes. It was truly my pleasure to photograph this family. Oh, and GO BIG RED!

I literally can't get enough of this family. This may be the 4th time I've taken photos with them - some even before Tenley was "in the picture" so to speak. I love them as a family and I could just eat Jameson and his sister for dessert - they're THAT sweet.

Two peas in a pod - these two. How fun to head out on a beautiful, sunny, fall day in Wisconsin and hang out with this family. I took lots of photos of the mom and dad... and entire family together too, but couldn't resist highlighting the images of this brother and sister duo. They're going to have their ups and downs I'm sure (as all brothers and sisters do) but how lucky they are to have each other!

I mean, really. Fall is when so many great things happen. The skies soften and the leaves burn a brilliant orange, red and yellow. Families get back into the rhythm of their lives and dreams turn to the holiday season... which is coming up, by the way.

I met this family - well a portion of it - last year when I shot family portraits at St. Johns' in Delafield. At that time, I met the youngest member, Olivia, and her parents... I didn't even know there was so much more to come!

What a treat to see this family interact - clearly enjoying each other on a beautiful fall day - and clearly loving the connection they have with it's youngest member. She's the beautiful string that ties it all up together in a sweet little bow.

Tenley... makes 10!

You've seen this baby girl before. I had the opportunity to photograph Tenley when she first arrived on the "scene" - see her here in my Baby Love entry. Tenley is the youngest of a brood of little ones belonging to Mary Kay... a proud grandma that asked me along as her family took in the sights and had a little fun at Lapham Peak State Park. We picked out a couple of spots to stop and group together... then grandma pulled out the squirt guns and the chaos took over. How great to see a family that knows how to have a little fun together! Thanks for bringing me along for the morning you guys... next year Miss Tenley will be in on all the fun too!

Togetherness

I had a wonderful time photographing this lovely family - they're friends and so our session was full of laughter and chatting... and a little bit of driving around looking for the perfect location.

In the end we found a few - a backyard, a nearby tree lined street (I'm sure that no trespassing sign was wasn't meant for us!) and the new space at Studios Etc. in downtown Oconomowoc. (beautiful!)

Summer won't last forever, but these portraits will - thank you friends!

Showstoppers

Every couple of weeks my kids get the urge to put on a "show." Sometimes it's a concert.. other times it's more like a variety act. Today I was treated again to a wonderful display of their talents. Jackson sang a couple of tunes (I only really recognized one) and Caitlin whipped out the ol' hoola hoop. Is it wrong that in between "sets" I noticed the beautiful light setting up across the driveway? I love these kids - and the fact that they don't even care when people passing by stop to watch their performances. In fact, I hope that never stops. I wish they could stay carefree and focused on how doing what they love makes them feel... not seeing the world through the eyes of every one else.

The name of my photography company is "smile out loud." That phrase, which at first doesn't seem to make sense, comes from something this young lady said nearly seven years ago! When she was around four, I think, she and I were doing something together - and she turns to me and says, "Momma, that makes me smile out loud!" To which I replied, "silly girl, you can't smile out loud." I went on to explain that a smile was an expression and didn't make any noise. She just sat there looking at me like I'd not quite made my way to discovering that she wasn't talking about a sound, she was talking about a feeling.

It occurred to me then - to smile out loud is to feel such happiness that it cannot be contained inside yourself. It's the happiness that seeps out between the cracks in your soul and displays itself for the world to see.

Now - all these years later, my little girl is growing into a beautiful young lady. She just recently blew out eleven candles topping her birthday cake. I'm so glad to be a photographer on days like that. Because see what I caught? See the look on her face? She's not just smiling - she's smiling out loud!

Bright Sunshiny Day

Tomorrow is Memorial Day (you know, the unofficial start of summer) but in Wisconsin that means absolutely nothing. Some years we've barely put away the shovels when Memorial Day arrives... tomorrow here it's supposed to be 90 degrees. Don't let that high temperature fool you, though. It's been a rather wretched spring here - I think twice last week we had highs in the 40's. Yuck! So, when I went to the store to buy materials for the shag pillows I planned to make - and keep - I chose this bright, cheery yellow. My living room walls are a very pale yellow - and the room is filled with chocolate brown leather couches and red upholstered chairs, so I thought yellow was as good of a choice as any. At least looking at them will remind me of what the sun is supposed to look like, even if I cannot see it in the sky.

Hooty and the Red Shag Pillow

My daughter is just a little obsessed with owls. Loves them! Wears them on necklaces, shirts, headbands and is constantly drawing them too. I'm a generally creative person, which says both a lot and not that much at the same time. I'm all for sewing, knitting, baking, painting... if it means I can get the project done in a day or two. I'm creative - with a time limit.

So a few days ago Caitlin and I got this idea - she'd draw one of her infamous owls and together we'd bring him to life. As she sketched out his eyes, beak, wings and feet... I gathered scrap fabric and started cutting out pieces. I set the sewing machine to zig-zag and layered the scraps on top of each other. This is what we got! She loves it because it's her drawing - in a tangible, holdable form. I love it because she loves it and thinks I'm a little bit magical for being able to make it. Anyone who knows sewing knows it's really not that difficult - but we don't have to tell her!

Behind the owl - I think her name is Liberty... no, Ruffles... is the pillow I also made for Caitlin's teacher. I love giving my kids' teachers gifts at the end of the school year to let them know how appreciated they are. This was also a very easy project. It would have been a thousand times easier if I'd been able to find a decent pair of scissors around here, but that's a whole other story. The pillow is strips of t-shirt material layered together to create a shag look. I think it looks cute and trendy - truth be told I've already made a yellow one for myself.

So let your creative side out! See what you can create! It will make you feel good - and a little bit magical too!

Baby Love

Oh, how I love babies. If I had my way, I'd have had a dozen of them. Well, maybe not a dozen, but a lot. Many. Probably more than the two I was blessed with.
Once you know that about me it's easy to understand why I'm so thrilled whenever I'm asked to photograph a little one - especially a newborn. I love their miniature eye lashes and toes and fingertips that readily grasp your finger when given the chance. I love how newborns settle into their dreams and how relatively easy it is to keep them safe and happy.
(This gets harder and harder every day they're alive, in my opinion.)
Anyway - I had a fantastic time with this new, new, newborn Tenley and her adorable big brother Jameson last week. Both of them are beautiful and perfect and will bring years of hapiness to their family. Congratulations - and Thank You for the baby fix.

There is a wonderful photographer from California whose work I truly admire. She often blogs about "in betweens"... the soft, fuzzy images she gets by accident on a photo shoot.

You get them when your finger flinches or your subject moves - and you're left with an image that at first glance seems like something you should delete.

But before you do... take a closer look.

What does this photograph make you FEEL?

Warm? New? Fresh? Loved?

Just like in life, "in betweens" can be the most precious. The moments in life worth saving.

Just making sure I had everything I'd need to keep up with this little lady. Miss B just turned two... and she's using all of her spirit and energy to keep her parents on their toes, that's for sure.

We met up a few Saturdays ago at the Discovery World Museum in downtown Milwaukee. A beautiful setting for natural light photography - and of course, lots of space to run.

When Miss B decided to stop - to watch the boats and adjust her sunglasses... I snapped some wonderful photos her parents can enjoy for a lifetime. Thanks for the workout Miss B... and for reminding us all what fun two can be - especially when it's sunny outside!

Protect Your Memories

Yesterday I learned that my wedding photographer passed away. He was the husband of a woman I used to work with - and so my husband and I hired him not so much because we loved his work, but because he came highly recommended and I knew he'd do the best job possible for us. Turns out, we couldn't have asked for a better guy. Skip came in full of smiles, which set us completely at ease. He was friendly and warm and worked so well alongside his wife, who was his assistant. Together they captured the posed moments as well as the candid ones and when it was all done - for a very reasonable price - we walked away with an album full of wonderful memories (and all the photo negatives too!)

Thirteen years later I still think he was the perfect choice. (Skip, that is... though the husband worked out well too!) And I am saddened to hear of his passing. But it got me thinking. Now that Skip is no longer with us... I'm so glad I have all of my photo negatives. Do you have yours? Are you counting on your photographer to save them forever for you?

What would you do if your photographer was gone?

When I complete a collection for a client - I often suggest they purchase the photo CD. Not because it's an easy way for me to make a few dollars... but because there are just some memories you'll want to have access to forever.

My advice? Spend the extra few dollars. It will mean the security of knowing that no matter what - your precious memories are protected - isn't that why we have the photos taken in the first place?

New Year, New Goals

I was reading one of the many photography blogs I follow the other day. The author/photographer was giving out advice on how to develop a following on a blog - the basic do's and don'ts of sharing on the web. I'm not sure why, but it's taken me many, many days to finally apply some of the knowledge she shared to my own business experience. I have this blog available so people - potential and current clients - can get to know a little about me and what I might be like as a photographer. Yet I forget to update this space with new and exciting things on enough of a regular basis to expect anyone to keep coming back.

Well, it's a new year... and now I have a new goal. And today, I even have something to share. Take a look at these!

They are the cutest little wallet sized Valentine's Day Card templates ever!

I created one for each of my kids. Caitlin loves the blue and I think it suits her really well. Jackson has always been a little on the bolder side... I think his card works well for him too!

What fun the kids will have handing these pint-sized photos to their friends and teachers at school for Valentine's Day. I think we'll adorn them with a little sweet... just to make them even more irresistible!

Lucky Me

I am really a very lucky person. I was lucky enough to get into and graduate from the college of my dreams. I was lucky enough to find a man to spend my life with. I was lucky enough to have two beautiful, healthy children. I was lucky that one was a girl and one was a boy - so I can enjoy what each has to offer to the world. I am lucky enough to have a family that loves me and lucky enough to get to spend time with not only my parents, but my siblings, their spouses and now their children. See? Lucky me.

I have three nieces and three nephews. Nice and even, but if someone wants to add more I won't complain. I absolutely love seeing them all... they range in age from very nearly 10 to just a day over 1 and I try to never miss a celebration in their lives. I am going to be that aunt that pesters them when they're teenagers and pries for information about their boyfriends and girlfriends. I hope they'll always see that I'm here for them and love them dearly.

Here are a few of the latest pics I stole of young V... who had a birthday just yesterday. She's pretty in pink and had a great first Christmas. Well, I guess she did, she didn't really tell me... but just look into her eyes... have you ever seen a happier girl?

My frenzied fall continues with another really fun photo shoot - featuring two adorable sisters! Nora and Cassidy were pretty in pink when I met them over the weekend at their home. But don't be fooled by your first impression. Calm and quiet one moment quickly turned into a flurry of falling leaves and so much giggling! Beautiful girls - beautiful memories - on a beautiful Wisconsin day. Doesn't get much better than this!

Fall in Wisconsin is fading away with every leaf that cascades to the ground. Mid October is about it for the beautiful fall foliage colors in my neck of the woods, so I was thrilled to find a colorful patch still thriving to use in this family's photo shoot. This growing family is so much fun: just ask Jameson to break a stick... or watch his swagger as he walks back to his family's car. You can't help but smile. I think this session shows just how important capturing the small moments in family life can be. As their family grows they'll add more to the fun for sure, but it will never be just the three of them again. So glad they chose me to capture a few of their special moments as they went fleeting by... just like the leaves.

Fall Fun For Families!

I have been working really hard this week to complete editing on about a dozen mini sessions I held over the weekend. I spent 20 minutes with each family at St. John's Military Academy on what could be argued was the most beautiful day we've had so far this fall. Gorgeous! It was really fun to see each carload arrive and pile out into the warm air - and it didn't take more than a moment for introductions to be made and work to begin. Every family is different, so each mini session produced a different feel. Some were more formal than others... some had kids I chased around... some featured children who were so very shy. My hope is that each session will provide each family with a memory they can hold onto, because like time - and this wonderful fall Wisconsin weather - it won't last.

So how cute is this little bug? Six month old Sophie is just one of the little ones I had the pleasure to photograph over the weekend. Twelve Oconomowoc area families signed up to take part in mini sessions I held at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy and two other locations. I couldn't have asked for more warm and friendly families to photograph... or more warm and friendly weather! In the next few weeks I will be posting a few of my favorites from each session. Caitlin: Senior Photo Session

It's not every day that I get a phone call inviting me to do high school senior portraits... that include a horse. And I'll admit - I was a little nervous at the thought of it. I mean, really, horses are huge animals. Really tall. Really, really big. What if I do something that scares it - or (uhg) it runs away while I'm supposed to be watching it?

Last weekend I put my fears aside and headed out to Caitlin's house - prepared to giddy-yup if I needed to... but there was no need to worry.

Caitlin and Rodder were extremely well behaved.

Not a single problem. In fact, the entire experience turned out to be pretty awesome.

Caitlin was completely delightful.

She made it all seem like it was so much fun...

Kinda makes me want to get my own horse.

Second Time's The Charm

Josie, Josie, Josie! What can I say about this blondie? Well, she's a mover. She's an explorer. She is a typical tot who couldn't find any reason at all to sit still while I photographed her. When I shot her family's session a few weeks ago, I got plenty of photos of the side of Josie's head. The top of Josie's head and the blur of Josie's feet as she scampered in the opposite direction. That's the beauty of photography. You have the chance to capture someone as they are at any given moment in time. For sure, Josie's family will remember how quick she is and how those little legs can carry her wherever she wants to go - in a flash! But truth be told, Josie's family actually hired me to get a few photos of their darling daughter NOT moving. So we headed out again and came back with a few that I really love

Live Life To The Fullest.

Words to live by? You bet. But they're more than just words to Savannah. This high school senior believes so strongly in the meaning behind these five words, she plans to tattoo the phrase on her body, once she figures out where she wants them. I think this was one of my favorite photo shoots ever. Savannah was up for anything. Wanted to try everything. Wade knee-deep into the lake? Sure. Pose on a chair in the middle of main street? Not a problem. Lay down in the center of a dirty country road? She never even batted an eyelash. Thank you Savannah, for your spunk and your sweetness... and for allowing your creativity to flow along with mine during your session. The result? My newly 10 year old daughter, my newly 7 year old son, my husband and I went to nearby Lapham Peak State Park over the weekend. Beautiful. Not only the landscape, over ripe with summer blooms, but these two beauties here. Once again they were so patient. I guess they're probably used to being stared down by a camera lens by now. I am so thrilled to have spent the day with such a great group - and so proud that they're my own.

The little ones lead, the parents follow.... and even though their busy bodies are well, busy - there's no mistaking the love between them. Every stolen snuggle. Every giggly gallop. This is the second time I've photographed this young woman. Last year she took part in my school fundraiser - it was fall and we took advantage of mother nature's colorful backdrop with some outdoor photography. This time around, we went a little more urban. Cream city brick - painted walls and a really interesting trip to the local bookstore, Books & Company!
This creative girl was up for anything, which always makes for a great shoot. I love it when clients bring their own ideas to the table. Some we try and they flop... but some we try and they're so great, I can't believe I've never thought of it before!

My opportunity came last week, when we decided to do a little camping at Kohler-Andrae State Park on the shore of Lake Michigan. What a beautiful place. Little Girl * Big Laugh

Six month old Veronica has her mama's eyes. She's got her daddy's legs. And she has one of the most beautiful laughs you'll ever hear. This little one has a laugh full of so much gusto, you might have to look twice to make sure it's coming from her bitty body. We weren't sure what we'd get at this session - it was late afternoon and she'd just had some dinner. Sleep was right around the corner. But little V surprised us all, with a good hour of smiling and of course, laughing. With her mama off camera goofing around, Veronica let it all go and it was so much fun! My wish for her is that she always finds a reason to laugh - to see the fun in life... it will take her far.

Spunk and Smiles

I could see it in her eyes. A five year old with plans for the day that didn't really include sitting still for a photographer. She was willing to sit and smile, sit and smile... for a while. Even her little sister was willing to play the game - for a bit. And then these girls put me to work. We spun around in circles, we peek-a-boo'd behind trees, even ducked under her father's shirt tails. But it was worth it. A series of photos that not only captured pretty girls in lovely dresses, but the spunk behind their smiles. These are the photographs I treasure. The ones that highlight what children are really like... these are the ones I enlarge and frame and put on the walls of my home. So I can always seen in their eyes, all the wonder that is childhood.

What a phone call can lead to...

I'm still amazed by the families that contact me. From out of the blue you pick up the phone or send me an email and then... we're friends! Planning your photo session, "what do you think of this park... what do you think we should wear?"... the back and forth and natural progression that happens when two people are working together to create something memorable. I'm always a little nervous arriving at our chosen location. "What if the light's too harsh... what if my camera jams up?" is playing in my thoughts.... but then I see you and your family approaching with big smiles on your faces and my heart does a little jump for joy. This is the moment I've been waiting for. The moment I get to put a face to a personality I've already grown to admire.

The following is a photo session that too - began with a simple phone call. For weeks we thoughtfully planned the event and when it arrived, like other photo shoots, it was hard work completely masked by delight and happiness. Three generations together on a beautiful day, Andrea, thank you for picking up the phone.

Summertime

We've been easing slowly into summertime at our house. Little by little we're sleeping in later, lazing around mid-day and staying up way past our bedtimes. Both of my children have birthdays in the summer, so there's also the general feeling of happiness and celebration in the air. I am loving the long days spent getting to know my children again - jealous of the time school takes away from us all. Sooner than I'd like, my 9 year old will be 10 and off to the intermediate school where growing up is as sure as the recess bell.

My 6 year old will turn 7 just days before classes begin. It always feels like I'm just getting my hands on him again - when the calendar demands he return to school. He'll be a second grader this year. That's the same grade I lamented about when my daughter arrived there. Second graders are so big! They don't need their moms to walk them into class. They can do so much on their own! Jackson for sure will miss summertime. He lives to fish and school just gets in the way.

I hope you're getting the most out of your summer as possible. Remember to capture these precious days before they slip through your fingers. Soon enough I'll be posting about my third grader and my 6th grader...

Can't Stop Time... I've Tried.

So it's that time of year again, when I start to get all sappy about how much my kids have grown and how another 365 days has gone by and I hardly even noticed. I start to wonder what the next school year will bring and how soon my son will become taller than my daughter. It all came rushing in on me yesterday after school when Cate, Jackson and I stopped off at a local beach so I could take some photos for an upcoming school fundraiser. After my shots were done the kids did what they love to do and ran full force into the lake at Bender Beach. They splashed and floated and looked out over the lake at the beautiful scene that greets us every time we're there. I sat on the beach blanket while gratitude and love for my growing babies practically overwhelmed me. I did, however, manage to collect myself before the kids skipped back to me, sopping wet and starving. They will find out for themselves some day how wonderful it is to be witness to such an incredible event as childhood.

There's been a new addition to our family! Meet Veronica! She's the sweetest thing since apple pie and belongs to my brother and sister in law. Born just a few weeks ago, she's already been the focus of my attention - and lens - a couple of times.

I will open my books up to doing a few weddings this year, but want to keep the number of weekends booked to a minimum, so if you're on the fence about contacting me with a date, ask soon, as I will be limiting myself this summer and fall.

Last year, I had such a great time working in my community on all kinds of fundraisers... from family portraits and talent shows to the documentation of Oconomowoc's only universally accessible playground. It was a pleasure to honor the gift certificates I donated to local charities too! I am ever hopeful that the coming year will bring me not only more business success, but a heart full of memories and new friends.

Strange New Year

It's been a crazy start to 2010 around here. I've already experienced two deaths and a birth and it's only the 8th of January!

The one thing I've learned is that you've got to take the good with the bad... cherish every moment and don't waste time!

The following really cheered me up - my boy lost his very first tooth! He refused to put it under his pillow the first night too... he didn't want the tooth fairy to whisk it away before his dad got to see it. A few days later he decided it was time, but unfortunately for all of us, the tooth fairy neglected to visit our house on that particular night. Sometimes it takes two nights of trying... right? Well, it's all sorted out now and everyone's got a big smile on their face... especially this guy - one tooth short.

It's Going To Be Hard To Choose...

I emailed with this bride-to-be this afternoon... and I agree with her message. It's going to be hard to choose just one of her engagement photo session portraits. I'm not bragging (well, not too much) but I am so pleased with the way this particular session turned out. We met on Saturday at a farm just outside Madison and it was not only a pleasure to meet Stacey and Andy - it was literally a photographer's dream! Bright red barns... white washed fences... weatherworn stable doors and a grove of evergreen trees perfectly coated with winter white snow. Ahhh!

These are my kids. They're dressed up for the 50th anniversary of their elementary school. The assignment: come to school dressed in 50s getup... and this is what I came up with. Cate is wearing a home-made poodle skirt. If you look closely you'll see I actually DREW the poodle. Fancy, I know. Jackson's outfit was so much easier. Jeans and a white t-shirt. I resisted the urge to roll a pack of candy cigarettes up in his sleeve. I know he'd have been stopped about five feet inside the front door and asked to explain himself. Obviously he'd have no idea that was "cool" at the time, so I spared him the ordeal.

All in all I think I did a pretty good job. With a little help from the lady at the fabric store I created the entire look in one Sunday afternoon. I won't get hurt patting myself on the back though. It's the same exact sort of thing MY MOM would have done for me. Thanks Mom!

One More Reason To Be Thankful

My brother and sister-in-law are expecting their first baby in the first weeks of 2010.

It will be the first new one on that side of our family in more than six years and we're all getting really excited for the big arrival!

Last weekend I was invited over to take a few photos of the ever-growing Mom-to-be. She's getting bigger, but more beautiful every time I see her. It's hard to top the happiness that accompanies hope for the future. Pregnant women are brimming with that kind of happiness.

The baby (they aren't finding out whether it's a boy or a girl, though surely it's one of those two...) isn't even official here yet and is already filling our hearts with love and joy. We're thrilled and this Thanksgiving know we've got another reason to be thankful.

I am so very proud of this next post... a wedding I shot this fall along with a new friend and colleague Leah. Jill and Cliff's Lake Geneva wedding was so beautiful - but their choice to stop off at the observatory was nothing short of brilliant. The light was so wonderful - it created such a glow around the wedding party. I might not know all there is to know about photography, but I do know good lighting when I see it - and the lighting this mid-October afternoon was perfect.

Sneak Peek - Ethan

This precious boy is a preemie... four months old. (or is it 2 months?) Whichever it is, time was no matter when it came to capturing his parents' hearts. I'm sure it took less than a blink of his eyelash to make them fall in love. Ethan's Mom and Dad doted on him every second of our photo shoot... dabbing drool off his bright red vest and carefully situating his bright red cap. What a joy! I can hardly remember when my two were so tiny... I'm fairly sure one of mine was NEVER this small. Congratulations to this new little family - and my best wishes for happy and healthy years to come.

It's that time of year again - when mom and dads and kids of all ages worldwide gather together to take that most elusive of photograph... the family portrait.

Here's a preview of a session I did just last week. A wonderful family with two beautiful golden retrievers... which made for a tricky picture. Lots and lots of eyes to watch for blinking and of course, the occasional wagging tail.

This young woman is full of creativity. A photographer herself - it was a lot of fun to roam the streets of downtown Oconomowoc searching for just the right spots to stop and take a few shots. I always love learning something new about someone and while High Schoolers tend to start off shy, they usually open up and share tid-bits of their lives with me by the time the session ends. Meredith was no exception, telling me about a her very creative way to raise some money for a school trip. I love to see kids who are willing to work hard to get what they want out of life. Spooky and Spectacular

We had a fabulous Halloween around here. The kids were sick the whole week before, but managed to heal up just time for all the fun! We did the usual jack-o-lantern carving.. put on our costumes (an Angel and Elvis... nice combination!) and then headed out into the neighborhood. We literally get hundreds of trick-or-treaters that roam our area on Halloween night. This year was the first in many that I've actually walked around with the kids. Usually I'm at home, manning the cauldron, in my awesome witch's costume. This year the job fell to my husband, who kept the cauldron - but dressed up as some funky 70's dude. No

making sense of that one. Anyway, a lot of fun was had by all... and we hadn't even headed to the Halloween Party yet!

Next year, feel free to drop by. I purchase a TON of candy, there will be plenty to go around.

We Love You So

Our family has had a rough go of it the last couple of weeks. We've had to say goodbye to a beloved member of our family, Bear. Turns out he is the reason why my son Jackson has had so many health issues these last few years... he is allergic to Bear! We tried everything to keep the two of them living under the same roof, but about three weeks ago realized it just wasn't going to be possible. Clearly, Jackson's health trumps dog, so we found Bear a wonderful new family to live with. That we finally see a light at the end of Jackson's health troubles is wonderful - but it isn't taking away all the sadness we're feeling as we say goodbye to a member of our family.

Thank goodness for Elvis. He has entered the building! Just try to stay sad when you've got this kid sauntering around all day long... clicking his fingers at you and calling you "baby".

It's downright impossible.

On The Gridiron

It's in his blood. That's the only way I can explain the way my son plays football. He's passionate. He's determined. He's only six and he's got that 'play hard or go home' attitude that accompanies so many competitive athletes. Other moms have warned me... told me to prepare for the many years of sideline sitting that I likely have ahead of me. I love it. And hate it. I mean that's my baby out there trying to smash someone else's baby into the turf. I don't think this is something I've taught him. I'm sure my life lessons are more like 'share' and 'take your turn'... but somehow, somewhere, this boy has picked up on the finer points of digging in and shoving on and not stopping until the ball is in the end zone. It's fine. I'll manage. I'll bring my chair and plaid blanket and endure the cold and rain in order to show him that I'm his biggest fan. Even while on the inside I'm secretly thinking how wonderful it would be to fold him into my arms and read him 'Goodnight Moon' just one more time.

A Mother's Wish

I love this photo! These hands belong to members of a family who isn't often all in the same state. Three brothers here... one off at college. More than once this Mom has talked about missing her oldest... and how life just isn't quite right when one of her boys is so far away.

This weekend I had the pleasure of taking some family photos for them. I thought of having them do this even before I arrived. Each of her boys plays football... which is why I originally thought of this gesture. But more than that - their family is a team. Their spirit shows through every inside joke and funny glance. No time or distance has broken the bond between her boys. Ok now... on three!

Heart of Hearts

A friend of mine just had this heart brought back from Mexico. It's blown glass and in the sunlight creates the most beautiful patterns on my wall. I think it's supposed to hang outside, in a tree possibly, to catch the light and cast a colorful hue over someone's garden... but I didn't have the heart to hang mine outside. It would surely be pummeled by a run-away football or someone recklessly swinging a bat. So it adorns one of the three windows in my dining room. If you only knew how happy it made my heart... to see this heart... you'd want one for yourself.

Wedding: B+R=LOVE

It doesn't get much better than the wedding I shot last weekend.

Everything was perfect - the lighting - the setting - the flowers... all of it. Surrounded by dozens of their closest friends and family, the bride and groom tied the knot facing each other and the amazing bluffs along Lake Michigan.

I would love to share each and every image from the big day... but this couple will have to remain out of the spotlight - sounds mysterious, right?

First Day of School

If you're the kind of person who loves taking photographs, it can be hard to see the line between just the right amount of pictures taken of someone... and that one too many. This morning - the first day of school around here - Jackson hit that one too many mark. Caitlin may never hit it, which is great for me because I'll always have someone willing to stop and smile, but Jackie Boy had other plans today. Here are a few I snapped, well, while he snapped.

The morning was not a complete bust. I caught my beatiful 4th grade girl in some pretty great light in the kitchen window.

So, off they went, my 9 year old and my newly minted 6 year old... on to the great, wonderful, exciting world of knowing things. I will miss spending time with them each and every day they're out in the world without me. But that's my job, isn't it? To give them everything I can so that one day they can go out there - and stay out there - without me?

Oh how I hope that day is a long, long time from today.

I took my family out to the spot where I'll hold a school fundraiser photo shoot in a few weeks - to check the status of the wildflowers and background leaves. So far - looks great! Caitlin can never resist a flower - so this bright yellow beauty ended up in her hands... Jackson was more into climbing on the dirt piles, but got caught up in his sister's arms when I announced I'd like them to pose for me.

Things Done and Undone

My house is just like yours - messy on the days when you've found something more interesting to do... clean when you have the time and energy to go around picking up after everyone else. As summer wraps up I'm finding more and more that when the sun sets I've still got dishes to clean and clothes to wash. Bummer.

Today we went on a grand shopping spree - well I shouldn't say we - more like my children were taken on a grand shopping spree, getting some really cute clothes to wear as they enter the 4th and 1st grades.

I did benefit from a buy-three-get-one-free bargain my mom funded. Nice bowls, huh?

I also managed to make some yummy oatmeal raisin bars, that came in handy as we unpacked our bags and bags of treasures. Funny how hungry you can get while spending money!

Hope you're enjoying these last few days of glowing summer sunlight. Take it all in. Make it all matter... and if need be, let those dishes wait until tomorrow - or winter, which is practically the same thing here in Wisconsin!

I am a still photographer who spends my time recording life as it happens for my family and others.

Our daughter seems to be a chip off the ol' blocks - as they say - and is a very talented photographer herself. This afternoon while I was photographing Jackson playing football, she captured this little fellow.

Don't Stop Dreaming

My son is almost six. He is a big boy with even bigger dreams. The past day or so has been hard for many football fans in my state... one of the men we cheered for - for his love of the game and ours - is now out of retirement (again) and playing for a rival team. Brett Favre is a household word in my home. Jackson has been a fan his entire life. When you overhear my son practicing his 'play by play' he's either being Brett, or taking a hand-off from Brett... or is Brett's best friend, Donald Driver.

At any rate, Brett's name is about as good as mud today - but that's not stopped my boy from dreaming.

Because no matter what the media says...

No matter what new team his hero now plays for...

Jackson is still a boy who loves football...

And this boy's gonna play.

Another Something New

I'm learning something new every day. So this is what I've been up to in the last few hours... working on a better way to watermark my web images. I hate it when the logo sits right on someone's face or happens to block out a really neat part of the photograph... this is the way to go!

I think I'll need to keep working on it - to get a consistent look to my web photos. I know I've done more than my share of changing my image over the last few months, but really do want to settle on a look that suits my style and reflects the photographer I am today.

Can You Believe This?

Last week when we were up north, my five year old son Jackson was being a pest. "When can I water ski, Mom?" "Can I just TRY it?" "I am TOO old enough!" To which I continuously replied... you're not old enough to water ski! You'll fall and break your neck. Five year olds do NOT water ski!
And then you'll never guess what happened. Our neighbors came out with a set of skis that are held together by a rod and are pulled by a spotter who holds the rope and can let go at the first sign of trouble. I relented. After all, he's proven me wrong before.
Here's what happened.

Guess next time I'd be better off telling him he CAN do it... rather than he CAN'T. Especially if proving me wrong is going to be his "thing."

Up North

We traveled up north Wisconsin this weekend to have a little fun on the lake. The weather was terrible at times and just barely warm enough at others, but we managed to have a great time anyway. My husband loves to fish and apparently it's genetic. Both children will cast a line if given the chance. Jackson will bait his hook, cast out himself and remove his catch... Caitlin not so much, but she's getting there.

Catching Fireflies

So my nine year old daughter had her first sleepover party last night. I had been dreading it, honestly, because I wanted to do all the right things. Serve the right food - provide the right amount of entertainment - but not too much or she'll think I'm hovering - and encourage the group to go to sleep at just the right time. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. Cate's pals had a great time just being girls. There were a few games... a little pizza... a little cake... a little gift opening... and a lot of fun. The big hit of the evening? Catching Fireflies! The girls ran around our yard at dusk trying to catch one of these summertime staples... once their jar was full they let them all go - content to watch them fly off into the night. I should have known that when children get together all they really need is the opportunity to let their imaginations light up - just like the fireflies.

Nine Years Ago Today...

Happy Birthday to my daughter who turned nine years old today! Cate is kind and generous, an artist and a reader, a friend and caretaker, a big sister and loving spirit. In her nine short years she's showed me how to see the good in people, the funny in any situation and how to never give up. I am truly blessed to call her mine... and I can't wait to see what the next nine years will bring.

A special Thank You to Cate's Birthday Buddy. A special person in my life who happens to have had a July 21st birthday before Caitlin joined us. This perfectly pink arrangement of flowers was delivered today courtesy KSOK and it is beautiful. Cate's first flower delivery was a big hit and put a smile on that face I love so much. You're the best!

Brides and their Bouquets

One of the first things I look for when I get to the site of a wedding is the flowers. Some people swoon over shoes... others drool over the dress... I am fond of flowers. Nothing adds to the richness and character of a wedding day like a perfectly arranged bouquet. I sometimes go through the photographs I've taken at any one wedding and am a little embarrassed at the number of images I've collected of the flowers alone. Dozens sometimes! The only thing that I'm drawn to more are flower girls. I'm guessing I come across as a bit of a stalker when it comes to little ones, dressed up and of course, carting around a few flowers.

Family Fun on the 4th

Beauty and her Brother

This morning I had the chance to photograph a beautiful little girl and her great big brother. She's just two but she can talk and sing and her turtle finding abilities would impress even the most experienced outdoorsman. Eva and Jack live in my neighborhood and so it was a real thrill to get to know them better while snapping away... not unlike the turtle Jack found while walking the boardwalk. Thanks you two... and your mom too... for the wonderful, warm, sunny time away from the bustle of my house. I had a great time, I hope you did too!

Bridge to Juniors

So, another milestone was celebrated this month - my daughter has bridged to Juniors, which is a big deal in the world of Girl Scouts. She has been working hard this spring to meet all the requirements for bridging... performing Junior tasks and learning the history of the organization and it's founder. To me, it sounds like work, but to Caitlin, it's big fun and she's had such a great experience over the last few years. She's got a lot of friends who are in her troop and you can tell by the smile on her face that she's really thriving. Cate is a good girl. A great girl. No one can match her compassion and love of helping others and sharing her kindness with friends. I am truly blessed with this one.
Her bridging ceremony took place at a local park on a beautiful day. My parents and my niece came over to watch it all. (Mom even got involved in the end song - thanks Mom!) Goodbye Brownies... hello Juniors... and a whole phase of childhood!

Graduation Day

My son graduated from Kindergarten a week or so ago... an event that I'd previously perceived with both happiness and sadness. On the one hand, he's doing what every mother dreams of... he's going out into the world and succeeding! He's mastered some basic reading, math and spelling. He's made some new friends. He's learned how to tie his shoes and work the zipper on his pants all by himself. What accomplishments! Most of all though, he's learned how to spend a great deal of his time away from me, which is where the sad part comes in. whoopee! He's good at doing things without me. Making friends without me. Having a great time, without me. I know it's selfish, but there's a tiny part of me that was hoping that I was the key to all of that. Guess not. I wasn't the key to his sister's, why should I be the key to his. Anyway, I truly am a proud mama and the fact that I knew of another mother in the crowd who might never see another of her daughter's graduations made me all the more thankful. How blessed am I that I was there to witness such a fantastic event in my son's life. Guess I'll gladly take the little dollop of sadness with the giant vat of happiness. So, here he is walking through the school's garden to get his diploma... and a little comparison. My boy in the first and last days of kindergarten. A huge thank you to Mrs. Miller for all the fabulous ways she helped him grow over the past year.

While her mom and dad posed in front of the Art Museum, Veteran's Memorial, Milwaukee Skyline and Lake Michigan, this little one kept such a beautiful smile on her face! There's a mom in my town who has been dealt an unimaginable blow. She is the mother of two small children, beautiful daughters, and the odds of her now seeing them grow into women are slim. Her story is not mine to tell, so I won't. I just want to say that I hope she's got a lot of fight in her. I hope her insides are purely spit and vinegar. I hope it matters that she's got everything to live for. I am praying for her.

Like most people I probably don't teach my children enough about being thankful. About being grateful for the lives we get to live... I try, but for some reason so much of what I have to say gets lost in the paternal translation. On days like today though, I think I see a little of what I've been drumming into their heads surface for the rest of the world to see. As the honor guard passed us this morning my five year old son took his baseball hat off and placed it over his heart. I overheard my daughter recite the pledge of allegiance along with the veterans and their families during a ceremony to honor those we've lost fighting for our country's freedom. Maybe they don't always show it, but I think maybe my children are starting to figure out that they're just part of something much greater than themselves. Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Happy Mother's Day to all you Moms out there!! What a great time of year to get to take a look around ourselves and see all that we've created... and take a moment to appreciate the woman who created us. It's a beautiful cycle really, to be a daughter and then a mother and hopefully someday a grandmother. I cannot think of a better life accomplishment. I'm so very proud of my own Mom, who endured a lot to bring me into the world and raise me into the woman I am today. I'm also so very proud of my children, who will go out into the world and do (I'm confident) great things. They're what I'll leave behind here on earth and I'm blessed to have someone (a couple of someones) who call me Mom. Now, I'm not a big fan of myself in photos, but I took this one (with the timer) by myself the other day. My treasures!

Imagination Station

I am working with the volunteer group in Oconomowoc to support the building of the city's first Universally Accessible Playground. I joined late, but am finding lots of ways to help, even as the build is set to begin. A few weeks ago I started going over to the site to take photos of the progress... I've been uploading them to the Imagination Station website so that everyone can follow along. It feels really good to be doing something helpful, useful and so wonderful for the kids in town that haven't been able to enjoy one of the most fundamental joys of childhood - playing!!! Come on out for the Walk Roll and Stroll event happening May 30th... and stop by to lend a helping hand the week the playground's being built, June 1-6, 2009. I know the organization would love the help and the kids, well the kids will finally get to enjoy the same freedom you and I probably took for granted.

A New Day

It's a new day - time for a new blog format? I'm just not the kind of girl who likes to keep things the same, I guess. I see a blog somewhere else that I really love and I want to have that kind of blog... then a day or two later I see yet another blog that looks great and of course, want to change what I've just created. It's strange really, because I'm not like that in real life. My husband jokes that my personal life motto should be 'same, same, same' because that's the way I like it. Predictable. Safe. Really safe. But I'm learning that in photography, being safe isn't going to get me the great shot. What it's going to get me are photos that are fit for shoving into an album somewhere... but not photos that I'll want to showcase. So, I'm taking some risks. Shooting all in manual. That's a big one for me. Sometimes it's paying off, sometimes not, but at least it's not boring. I went along on my daughter's 3rd grade field trip and shot the entire event in manual mode. Some of the photos are really fun, some are just really dark, but I think I learned more than she did at the museum. All in a day's work... a new day's work...
